New Venue cans '04 events
WildTracks owner John Gorst has been forced to take the action after the local authority raised concerns over earthworks on the site, including the construction of spectator banking. East Cambridgeshire District Council notified the circuit of the necessity for a retrospective planning application to be submitted last week. The council also requested an Environmental Impact Assessment
Gorst, in an official statement, said: "In 1995 we received a planning consent for karting and rallycross. After completing the circuit we were advised that we had to make a retrospective planning application for the bunding [earth bankings around the track] and for the engineering works for the circuit itself.
I am sure you understand my own feelings regarding these delays and the embarrassment which it causes us all at WildTracks."
Although the unresolved planning issues mean that the Motor Sports Association is unable to issue a track licence, it is hoped that the venue will be able to hold its first competitive events and British Championship rounds in 2005.
British Rallycross Drivers' Association chairman Mike Dresser said: "There's no hiding the fact that this is very bad news. We were diligent when we decided to place rounds at WildTracks - the venue has planning permission for rallycross. This represents an entirely unforeseen problem."
In addition to the two rounds of the British Championship, that were scheduled for July 25 and September 19, the circuit was also poised to hold two rounds of the BTRDA Clubmans Rallycross Championship. The BRDA, which administrates the championships, is currently working to find alternative events, although championship coordinator Bill Skermer admitted that rescheduling will be difficult.
"There is no quick fix," said Skermer. "Finding venues with available dates that fit within our existing calendar won't be easy, but we'll sort it out as fast as we can."
