Sebring wrap-up: Tag fastest

Alex Tagliani of Player's-Forsythe Racing set the pace at the latest round of Champ Car testing at Sebring International Raceway this week. The French-Canadian got down to a 51.1-second lap in his Reynard-Ford, the fastest time posted so far in 2002 testing

"Tag arrived fit and focused and he gave us some real good feedback on what the 2002 car is doing and what we need to work on," remarked the team's technical director Bruce Ashmore. "I'm pleased with the team's progress. Our testing is right on schedule."

"I'm absolutely delighted by the way everything went over the last two
days," said Tagliani, who managed 140 laps. "I've been doing quite a bit of training since the holidays and I could sense, as soon as I got into the car, that I was fitter and stronger and ready to go back to work. The car was awesome, and it's great to see the progress the team is making with every testing session."

A total of nine drivers were in action over the three days. Adrian Fernandez and Cristiano da Matta were next up behind Tagliani. Owner-driver Fernandez was forced to use Shinji Nakano's Lola-Honda after a fuel leak was detected in his own car, but the Mexican still clocked a 51.4-second lap.

Da Matta emerged from a long winter vacation in Brazil to run right on the pace in the Newman/Haas Lola-Toyota. "The car was nicely balanced after Christian (Fittipaldi) worked with it for two days," da Matta said.

Bruno Junqueira and Michael Andretti were caught at 51.5 seconds, just ahead of Patrick Racing rookie Townsend Bell at 51.58 seconds. Warmer temperatures led to quicker lap speeds on Wednesday, the final day of activity.
