Power-to-pass increase for Mexico

The Champ Car World Series will experiment with double the amount of power-to-pass horsepower in its season finale in Mexico

The system usually gives an extra 50 horsepower when a driver activates it, but at Mexico City on November 11 it will give an extra 100 horsepower.

Drivers will also be able to engage the system for 75 seconds, rather than the usual 60 seconds that has been the limit all season.

Champ Car race director Tony Cotman said: "We will analyse how a 100 horsepower power-to-pass feature will affect the racing so we can consider it for next year.

"It has been very popular with the drivers, and even more so with the fans, who love our racing."

Cotman added that series officials had waited until now to test the changes because they didn't want it to influence the drivers' championship, which Sebastien Bourdais secured last time out.

"Everyone assumes that if we go up another 50 horsepower, it will add even more excitement," he said. "But we've wanted to wait until now because we didn't want the experiment to affect the championship."

Cosworth's track support manager Ken Deagle believes that the extra horsepower should change the way the system is used by the drivers.

"With 50 more horsepower than normal, it should become less of a defensive tool," he said. "A driver is going to wonder how much power does he have and when does he use it?"
