Nurb 24: BMW whitewash
BMW has scored a resounding 1-2 in the Nurburgring 24 Hours, run in some of the most difficult weather conditions in the event's history
With works entries from Audi, BMW and Opel and numerous strong privateer teams, there was an impressive starting field some 220 cars taking the start. Over 220,000 witnessed the BMW M3 GTR of Dirk Müller, Jörg Müller and Hans-Joachim Stuck clinch victory, with the second BMW of Duncan Huisman, Pedro Lamy and Boris Said finishing second, one lap in arrears. The race was run in ever changing conditions, which included heavy rainstorms that caused many crashes.
The Porsche 911 GT3 of Lucas Luhr, Arno Klasen, Marc Duez and Olaf Manthey finished third, ahead of the Abt-Audi TT-R of Patrick Huisman, Christian Abt, Frank Stippler and Karl Wendlinger. The second Audi, which included DTM points leader Mattias Ekstrom on the driving strength, finished eighth after a 48-minute pitstop for repairs after Fredrik Ekblom spun into the barriers on the Döttinger Höhe straight due to aquaplaning.
Last year's winners, Opel, had a nightmare race. It lost one of its Astra V8 Coupes when DTM star Peter Dumbreck crashed just before midnight, while its other car also lost time for lengthy repairs, but recovered from 70th place to finish a praiseworthy 10th.
