N.Technology expands VPD capability

N.Technology, Alfa Romeo's competition subsidiary, has extended its supply contract with American simulation software provider MSC.Software to integrate 'MSC.Nastran', 'MSC.Patran' and 'ADAMS/Engine' into its virtual product development (VPD) process for the development of its parent company's European Touring Car Championship racecars. The company in Chivasso, Italy, is a longtime user of MSC's 'ADAMS/Car' and 'ADAMS/Motorsport' tools

"The need to speed up our cars determines our business decisions," said N.Technology development engineer Andrea Adamo. "Fast decisions have to be made regarding how a car can be prepared for a specific track, or which suspension or engine specification is right for a certain race. We have to do that virtually because we don't always have the time to build a prototype and test it. Changes to the cars often have to be made in less than two weeks and we work on the principle that the results generated after the race can always help us before the next race. With VPD, we can run sensitivity studies with hundreds of different configurations in a matter of minutes."

Frank Perna, the CEO of MSC, commented: "The 'ADAMS' product suite has excellent traction within the motorsport industry, especially for F1 racing, rally championships in Europe and South America, and the Champ Car series in the USA. These teams have directly correlated performance improvements with the use of products like 'ADAMS/Car' and we are extremely pleased to see that these successes are resulting in increased investments with MSC.Software.

"Virtual product development isn't an individual product you can buy out of the box. It's an environment that is designed to evolve and build on product development success. So we look forward to working with other racing teams around the world as they integrate more MSC.Software products and services into their vehicle design and race preparation processes."
