Hunter-Reay targets F1
Champ Car rising star Ryan Hunter-Reay wants to be America's next Grand Prix contender and a former F1 engineer reckons he's got all the right attributes
Having demonstrated the two-seater Champ Car in New York over Easter, Hunter-Reay starts his Champ Car campaign with Herdez Competition this weekend at Long Beach. While his immediate future is in Champ Cars, he has ambitions on a greater scale.
"I've never made any secret of the fact that my ultimate dream is Formula 1," said Hunter-Reay. "I had to make some tough decisions this year as I had offers from IRL but I wanted to stay in Champ Cars as I think it's a great proving ground for F1. I should say though that, even though my dream is F1, I'm still here to win in Champ Car. I want this title as much as I've ever wanted anything."
Former Arrows chief race engineer Graham Taylor was Hunter-Reay's team manager at American Spirit Team Johansson last year and he backs the youngster's hopes.
"Ryan has just the right driving style for F1: smooth and uncomplicated," said Taylor. "I never saw him let the car get out of shape. He has a great understanding and feel for the car."
