No.2 Audi crew still pushing for title
Audi's Le Mans Series championship contenders Mike Rockenfeller and Alexandre Premat are confident they have a chance of taking the title at the Autosport 1000km, despite qualifying 1.7 seconds behind their Peugeot rivals and championship leaders Nicolas Minassian and Marc Gene
Rockenfeller and Premat are just two points behind the No.7 Peugeot crew, but need the 908 HDi FAP to finish third if they win to take the title.
"We need to put Peugeot under pressure," Premat told autosport.com. "Like for example at Monza, we were two seconds a lap slower and then we put them under pressure in the race and they became unstable.
"I think we can do that again here."
Rockenfeller agreed, but added that a sprinkle of typical English weather would help their chances: "It does depend on the weather conditions and this is something that Alex and I have talked about.
"I know if it rains then we will be much closer to Peugeot, and we will be able to put them under presser, and then maybe they will make mistakes," he added.
Premat and Rockenfeller have not been the quickest Audi R10 TDi crew, but the No.1 car of Rinaldo Capello and Allan McNish has run into several problems during the course of the season.
The junior car, in contrast, has run like a train and been a model of consistency. Nevertheless both Rockenfeller and Premat describe themselves as 'proud' to be in a position to fight for the title.
"It was great to beat Peugeot twice at Le Mans, which was also a surprise for some people this year, and if we can win the LMS it will be even better," said Rockenfeller. "But when you look how fast they have been, it makes us even more proud that we are only two points behind going into the last race.
"Even if we don't win the championship, we can still be proud of what we have achieved this season. We can look back on this year and say we have done a good job, we haven't damaged the car, and we have raced well."
