Mikkel Mac leads damp first Nurburgring Formula 2 practice

Denmark's Mikkel Mac set the fastest time in Formula 2's first ever practice session at the Nurburgring this morning

For the second weekend running F2's drivers were faced with difficult, damp conditions, but Mac coped best to post a time of 1m51.199s and go fastest.

Mac had traded fastest laps with championship leader Mirko Bortolotti, but sealed top spot on his tenth tour of the German circuit.

Bortolotti was forced to settle for second, although India's Armaan Ebrahim did his best to drop the Italian further down the order - just 0.001s separating the pair at the session's close.

Having claimed a maiden F2 victory last time out at Spa-Francorchamps, Will Bratt ended the 45-minute session fourth fastest, less than a quarter of a second down the road.

Britain's Jack Clarke rounded out the top five ahead of Miki Monras, who lost ground to the championship leaders at Spa last weekend.

In only his second F2 race weekend Jordan King was again on good form, heading the timesheets early on and ending the session seventh fastest.

Tobias Hegewald beat erstwhile championship leader Christopher Zanella to eighth, while Alex Brundle closed out the top 10.

2010 F2 runner-up Jolyon Palmer finished the session 14th fastest, as he makes a one-off return ahead of GP2's visit to the Nurburgring at the end of the month.
