McNish: Audi expect better race pace

Audi Motorsport driver Allan McNish believes the German carmaker's two R10 TDIs will be more competitive in Sunday's opening Le Mans Series round at Barcelona after they were out-gunned by their rival diesel Peugeots in qualifying

McNish, who along with driving partner Rinaldo Capello, qualified third on the grid 1.3s behind the pole-winning Peugeot 908 Hdi FAP, also said he would have been closer to the French machines if he hadn't run in to traffic on his fastest lap in the 20 minute session.

"The balance was not quite so good this morning compared to how the R10 TDI handled in yesterday's practice," he said.

"We made changes for qualifying which improved matters. This circuit works the tyres very hard so the first lap is critical.

"Unfortunately I had to overtake a slower car into Turn 1, losing two or three tenths, plus another two cars on that lap but that didn't cost me the 1.3secs to the pole Peugeot."

"We know from experience the Audi R10 TDI is better in race conditions than qualifying so I'm very hopeful for the race."
