Martin Whitaker pays tribute to Tyrrell

Martin Whitaker, European director of Ford Racing said: "Ken Tyrrell and the cars that carried his name are synonymous with the motorsport heritage of the Ford Motor Company. Together with a dedicated band of engineers and mechanics, Ken took on the established front-running marques of the sport - Ferrari, Lotus and BRM - and beat them with a combination of talent and flair.

"Undoubtedly it is the name of Jackie Stewart that is most strongly associated with the blue cars, but we mustn't forget that other great drivers, and innovative engineering, emerged from Surrey woodyard that was Ken's base. Francois Cevert, Patrick Depailler, Jody Scheckter, Ronnie Peterson, Michele Alboreto, and Jean Alesi, to name just a few, each gave their all for Uncle Ken, who also brought far-reaching technology to the sport with leading-edge designs such as the six-wheeled P34.

"Ken will be sorely missed by all of us at Ford Motor Company, who knew him or were touched by his pioneering spirit. The sport has lost a great competitor, but his legacy is etched in a magnificent heritage."
