Maiden A1 GP win for Verstappen

Team Holland and Jos Verstappen righted the wrongs of race one by pulling off a last-lap victory in the A1 GP feature race in Durban

The Dutch squad took their first win in the series, this time helped by a late problem for Team Switzerland's Neel Jani.

Jani had driven an immaculate race in which favourites Britain and France were both put out of contention by disastrous pitstops just a couple of laps into the event.

Despite three safety car periods, Jani kept late-stopper Nelson Piquet Jr in sight throughout and claimed the lead when the Team Brazil car finally pitted.

Switzerland looked all set to claim the win until the car slowed going onto the last lap and Verstappen latched onto Jani's tail.

The orange car was able to drive past Jani at exactly the same spot where Verstappen tried unsuccessfully to take the lead from France in the first race.

The Swiss entry was just able to hang on for second place ahead of a rapidly closing Team Portugal car, which finished just over a tenth of a second behind.

New Zealand ended the race in fourth, with Stephen Simpson taking a popular fifth place for home nation South Africa.

Team Germany driver Timo Scheider could have claimed the win but for a late mistake which saw him park his car with a broken wheel at the back of the circuit. Scheider had run within sight of Jani for much of the distance, comfortably clear of Verstappen.

The Czech Republic hopes stalled early in the race when Tomas Enge could not get his car away from fifth on the grid.
