LG Moment of 2010: Kovalainen's fire

Heikki Kovalainen's spectacular fire during the Singapore Grand Prix has been voted as the LG Moment of the Year at the AUTOSPORT Awards

Autosport Awards

The Autosport Awards are a series of awards presented by motor racing magazine Autosport to drivers that have achieved significant milestones each season. Some of the presentations are selected by the general public via a reader's poll.

The fire erupted from his Lotus on lap 59 of the race, while he was running in 14th position.

Kovalainen smartly avoided the pitlane and instead parked his car out of harm's way on the start/finish straight, grabbed a fire extinguisher from over the pitwall and extinguished the blaze himself.

The Finn accepted the award by video link from sportscar legend Derek Bell.

"Thanks to LG and all my fans for this award. It means a lot to me," said Kovalainen.

F1 fans were asked to vote on their favourite moment of the year by visiting www.lgeracing.com and choosing from the key moments of the season.

Among the other moments nominated for the prize were the dramatic collision between Red Bull team-mates Sebastian Vettel and Mark Webber in Turkey and Webber's miraculous escape from his huge crash at the European Grand Prix.
