Legge has talent, says Vasser
Former champion Jimmy Vasser reckons that Katherine Legge has the talent to compete in Champ Car next season, after watching her at a two-day test at Sebring this week
Vasser watched Legge lap the Florida track in 51.5 seconds yesterday - half a second quicker than her best lap of the previous day. The Toyota Atlantic race winner logged 119 laps on the 1.66-mile road circuit completing both long and short runs.
It is not yet certain how many seats, if any, will be available in the team next season. Vasser has yet to decide whether to retire and Cristiano da Matta has also yet to re-sign with the team.
If a seat becomes available in the team, then Vasser says Legge is in contention to fill it.
"She did a great job and she's definitely not afraid to push the car to the limit," Vasser said. "We all watched Katherine race last year in Atlantics and we knew that she was a good driver. But until you work with someone you don't truly know how determined they are. After these last two days, one thing I know for sure now is that she has a tremendous amount of determination. She has the talent to compete at this level."
"We'll sit down as a team in mid January and look at all the data from the tests and make a decision from there. Katherine, along with the other drivers we've been looking at, will certainly be in the mix when we get to that point."
Giorgio Pantano, Ryan Dalziel and Ryan Briscoe have all tested for the team recently, and are also in contention for a possible drive.
Legge said that she was pleased with her time of 51.5 seconds, and could have gone faster if there were other drivers on the track laying down rubber.
"It was an awesome experience. Seeing as there weren't any other Champ Cars on the track during the test so there wasn't much rubber, I really wanted to reach a time of 51.5 and I was able to do that. We did a lot of laps and some pretty long runs and I came away from the experience knowing I did my very best."
