Lap-by-lap race report from Detroit

Lap 1: Montoya makes a great start.

Max Papis is pushed into the wall by Patrick Carpentier.

Good start by Tony Kanaan, he's up to fourth place.

Full course yellow.

Montoya leads Paul Tracy, Dario Franchitti, Tony Kanaan, Gil de Ferran and Roberto Moreno.

Lap 4: Restart. Franchitti is all over the back of team-mate Tracy.

Blundell pits with a puncture, restarts at the back of the grid.

Lap 5: Montoya leads, followed by Tracy, Franchitti, Kanaan, de Ferran, Moreno and Andretti.

Lap 6: Montoya has a 1.6s lead over Tracy, Franchitti.

Lap 10: Montoya continues to pull away from Tracy, who is trying to hold off Franchitti.

Lap 11: Tracy lets Franchitti past. Franchitti is chasing Montoya.

Lap 12: Kanaan is now closing up behind Tracy.

Lap 16: Moreno is chasing de Ferran. Montoya leads Franchitti by over 8s.

Lap 19: Montoya leads Franchitti by almost 9s. Tracy is third followed by Kanaan, de Ferran and Moreno.

Lap 22: Jan Magnussen takes Robbie Gordon off into the tyres on Turn 3 while trying to overtake.

First round of pitstops.

Full course yellow. Montoya pits, with a 9.5s advantage over Franchitti, who also comes in.

Greg Moore goes from eighth to fourth after his first stop.

Lap 26: Still under caution.

Montoya leads, followed by Franchitti, Tracy, Moore.

Magnussen pits for new nosecone, following accident.

Roberto Moreno down to ninth after pitting.

Lap 28: Restart.

Gugelmin loses control - looks as though he spun after contact with da Matta, collects Carpentier and flips over at Turn 3.

Full course yellow.

Carpentier is still in the car, he is reporting neck pain - paramedics are treating him.

Lap 29: Still under full yellow.

Lap 30: Carpentier is being taken out of the car.

Lap 31: Carpentier is unconscious and is being transferred to Detroit hospital.

Lap 33: Fifth-placed Gil de Ferran has hit the wall under yellow - there is heavy damage to his car.

Carpentier is reported to be conscious.

Lap 34: Cars getting ready for restart.

Lap 36: Race restarts, Montoya leads Franchitti, Tracy.

Lap 41: Montoya still leads, followed by Franchitti, Tracy, Moore and Kanaan.

Moore is hot on the heels of Tracy.

Michel Jourdain Jnr pulls over on the track.

Memo Gidley has also stopped at the side of the circuit.

Lap 43: Full course yellow is out.

Franchitti, Tracy pit.

Montoya either misses or doesn't get his pit signal, and is now stuck behind the safety car.

Lap 46: Race restarts.

Team boss Chip Ginassi tells Montoya to pull away fast and get some space between himself and second-placed Franchitti.

Lap 49: Montoya leads Franchitti by 7.6s.

Moreno is running eighth, following the battle between Kanaan [sixth] and Vasser [fifth].

Lap 55: Montoya leads by 13.8s over Franchitti. His pit crew are getting ready to receive him for his second stop.

Moreno gets past Kanaan.

Lap 58: Montoya pits for fuel and tyres with a 10.1s stop. Rejoins in eighth position.

Lap 59: Franchitti leads, followed by Tracy and Moore.

Montoya is 10s behind Franchitti.

Lap 60: Montoya up to seventh, after overtaking Kanaan.

Lap 63: Montoya takes Moreno off. He stops, but gets it back and rejoins the race in eighth position.

Moreno rejoins the track.

Full course yellow.

Lap 66: Restart. Franchitti leads.

There's a massive accident through Turn 2 involving several cars - Montoya is clear of it.

Al Unser Jnr avoids trouble, but loses several places.

Da Matta emerges from his cockpit - which is all that is left of his racecar.

Race officials, decide to call a two-hour race. There are nine minutes to go, and too much debris to clear before the race can return to green.

Franchitti looks certain to win under yellow, with Montoya in eighth.

Four minutes left until the chequered flag.

Just two-and-a-half minutes to go, the pace cars are changed and Castro Neves runs into the back of Montoya - who goes out of the race.

Franchitti takes the win.
