Grapevine: Motorsport versus football in Mexico
The World Cup of Motorsport met the football World Cup in Mexico City on Thursday, when 13 A1GP drivers took on a host of former Mexico star players and celebrities in a match at the famous Azteca Stadium
Manuel Negrete, who scored a famous scissors kick goal against Bulgaria in the 1986 finals in the stadium, was joined by Luis Roberto Alves (who played in the 1994 World Cup) in an all-star line-up also consisting of Mexican A1 drivers David Garza and David Martinez, plus actors and TV personalities - and autosport.com's Charles Bradley.
On the A1GP drivers' side, no less than 13 different nationalities took to the pitch for the 20-minute match. They took a two-goal lead early on, through Team USA's Jonathan Summerton and a penalty from Khalil Beschir (after autosport.com had inadvertently handballed it in the area).
But the local team was not to be denied, with actor Patricio Cabazu netting a double and sports presenter Ricardo Pelaez also getting on the scoresheet. The match was put to bed by the classy Negrete, who is now almost 50, who scored the final goal in a 4-2 scoreline.
"It was really cool to be able to play at the Azteca stadium where so much has happened in the history of Mexican football," said Garza. "It was even better to be able to do it with Negrete who scored that famous goal here in 1986. Now it's time to focus on the track."
