GPM target Durban street race

Grand Prix Masters organisers are targeting Durban, South Africa as a potential venue for the series' first street race in 2007, autosport.com can reveal

After the success of the maiden event in Kyalami last November, GP Masters CEO Scott Poulter admitted that the series is looking into branching out to street courses and is presently in talks with representatives from Durban.

The round would be held on the same layout that A1 Grand Prix used so successfully in January this season, where 102,000 people attended over the course of the three-day event.

Any GP Masters deal with Durban would not affect future A1 Grand Prix events in the series. A1 GP have two years left on their contract with Durban, and any Masters race would not be a supporting race to A1 GP.

GP Masters' South African round will again be held in Kyalami this season, however Poulter admitted that for 2007 Durban was an option.

"Street races are great events and we are talking with Durban in South Africa," he confirmed to autosport.com. "This would not be instead of the A1 race there but we would hold a separate race weekend for GP Masters there next year.

"We have a deal with Kyalami this season but possibly in the future. A1 was very popular there."

In addition to a potential Durban race, there is also the possibility of a race in North America in 2007, aided by their American driver, Eddie Cheever.

"We are talking to several promoters in the states and in Canada and the US," Poulter added. "Eddie Cheever has been a big help. He is a great thing for us to have on board. F1 and the US has had an odd relationship and Eddie can help us bring us commercial deal.

"I'm confident we will have a race in the states in 2007, it is just a question of where. It could possibly a street race."
