Gommendy earns Porto's first win

Tristan Gommendy took Porto's first Superleague Formula win at Vallelunga with a sensational last-lap move on Franck Perera to deny Roma a famous home win

Gommendy, who had closed a six-second gap to his French compatriot, made his move at the Curva Soratte and then defended his position robustly to go on to victory.

The race ran under the safety car for four laps in the early stages following a major crash at Curva Cimini on the opening lap. Flamengo's Tuka Rocha appeared to miss his braking point and slammed into the back of AC Milan's Robert Doornbos, eliminating both, and the innocent Corinthians car of Antonio Pizzonia.

Toccacelo led as the safety car pulled in, but was demoted by a brilliant move from Soucek around the outside at the Curva Campagnano, and was then eliminated himself as he and Perera came together while battling for second at the same corner on lap nine.

Soucek looked set to score his and Atletico's first Superleague victory, but his second pitstop, only four laps after his first, was followed by his eventual retirement.

The pitstops were again instrumental in the result, with PSV Eindhoven's Yelmer Buurman and Gommendy being promoted to second and third while poor pit work from Sevilla dropped Borja Garcia down the order from third.

Gommendy got by Buurman when the Dutchman ran wide at Curva Cimini, and then began to take a second a lap out of countryman Perera - reaching his rear diffuser by lap 24 and passing him for victory.

Third went to Buurman and fourth to Liverpool's Adrian Valles, who benefited from a spin from Olympiakos driver Stamatis Katsimis with three laps to go. He got by unscated, but Tottenham's Duncan Tappy and Galatasaray's Alessandro Pierguidi were not so lucky, both being clipped and both retiring.

Davide Rigon came through to fifth for Beijing Guoan, giving the Chinese side a 59-point lead over PSV with only two races to go and 100 points up for grabs.
