Giebler wins on IPS debut
Phil Giebler made a dream Infiniti Pro Series debut at Homestead by grabbing victory for the Duesenberg team. Giebler only signed with the team a week before the season-opener.
Giebler (who raced in Formula 3000 last year and has a European racing background) pulled away from Brazilian Thiago Medeiros in the last two laps to take the win, whilst Jesse Mason (another rookie) was third.
"It was an amazing weekend," said Giebler, who qualified sixth. "I was just trying to run a good race and learn a lot. I'm just very glad to get this under my belt and make a run for the title. This is my very first oval race, and I'm starting to like it already."
Giebler had to be push-started at the start and started from the rear of the field. He and Medeiros ended up sparring with six laps left, but Giebler got past him coming out of Turn 4. He won by 4.1372 seconds after Medeiros backed off.
Mason, 19, is a student in Wales. The Canadian learned more lessons this weekend in Florida.
"Right off the bat, I thought we did an OK job," said Mason, who started fifth. "Segway and Brian Stewart gave me a great opportunity to be here, and I'm just happy with how things went."
