Ganassi to run Toyota power in 2000
Ganassi Racing is switching from Honda power to Toyota power in a three year deal announced at Fontana.
It is a surprising move for the reigning CART champion team, in that Toyota has yet to score its first CART victory.
Team owner Chip Ganassi, who could see his driver Juan Montoya win a fourth consecutive championship title in the season finale this Sunday said, 'We've been monitoring the Toyota, and I have to tell you I think they're ready to win.
'I want to be the one to bring them to the winner's circle.
'Making this decision was a long, involved process, but I'm happy with it. I feel they were the ones to be with. I'm sure we're going to continue to win races.'
Montoya, who will be Honda-powered in Sunday's race, is currently nine points behind series leader Dario Franchitti.
'It has been good driving with Honda,' said Montoya. 'I have scored seven wins so far, and I'm in contetion for the title.
'Honda has always been with the best teams. The move to Toyota for us is a new commitment, and a new challenge.
'I believe we can win races with Toyota.'
Rumours have circulated for some time that Ganassi would be runing a second team in 2000 for Toyota cars, but Ganassi dismissed that in California, confirming that Montoya and Jimmy Vasser would be running with Toyota.
