Ganassi confirms Junqueira for 2002

Champ Car team boss Chip Ganassi finally confirmed Thursday that Bruno Junqueira will continue to drive for the team in 2002

The 25-year-old Brazilian shone on several occasions during an uneven first year in America, taking a win at Road America and pole position at Nazareth Speedway. But his 2001 campaign was handicapped by starting with fellow CART rookie Nicolas Minassian as team-mate after Ganassi released Jimmy Vasser.

Minassian was released at mid-season and replaced by American Memo Gidley, who recorded three podium finishes. However, Ganassi elected to keep Junqueira, the 2000 FIA Formula 3000 International champion, on board to honour a two-year contract.

"I'm excited to have the opportunity to drive for Team Target in 2002," Junqueira said. "Last year, I developed a good relationship with my engineers and team members, and I'm looking forward to working with them again. We had some good races, but I was hoping for better results than what we had. I'm looking forward to getting back in the seat of the Target car and winning some more races this year."

Junqueira also competed in the Indianapolis 500 for Ganassi, finishing fifth. His 2002 programme with Ganassi will also include a return to the Brickyard. Ganassi managing director Mike Hull welcomed Junqueira back to the team.

"Bruno learned a lot from his rookie season last year," Hull said. "He's an extremely talented driver who had some flashes of brilliance last year. He also made some mistakes, which I'm confident he's learned from. Bruno has shown he can run at the front and win races. With one year of experience in CART, he has a chance to compete for the championship this season."

Junqueira's 2002 test programme will begin on January 22 at Sebring.
