Fittipaldi happy with Sebring test
Christian Fittipaldi was pleased with the progress made by his Newman-Haas team after shaking down his Toyota-powered Lola at Sebring International Raceway on Sunday
Fittipaldi completed a second day of testing on the 1.65-mile road course after first testing the 2002 car at the same circuit over 10 days ago.
"We made some progress today in terms of knowing what type of set-up the 2002 Lola-Toyota needs to be competitive," said Fittipaldi, after posting a quickest lap time of 51.7s. "We were able to work on setting up the car during this test as opposed to just getting to know the car like we did last time."
The Brazilian also made use of the test session to get accustomed to the new HANS (Head and Neck Support) device which has been mandated at all courses by CART this season.
"I used the HANS at my test here earlier this month as well as today and haven't had a problem with it," added Fittipaldi. "I have to be able to wear it at all races this season - not just because CART mandated it but because it is the right thing to do."
Fittipaldi's duties ended on Monday, but the team will continue with Cristiano da Matta making his first testing appearance of the year.
"I spent a lot of time in Brazil relaxing and training to stay in shape but it is good to get back to work and see everyone focused and ready to go," said da Matta. "I'm ready to pick up where we left off last season and I'm looking forward to driving the 2002 Lola-Toyota."
