Franchitti quickest in Saturday practice
With first qualifying turned into a lottery by rain showers, the grid for tomorrow's CART race at Portland should be decided by the second session later today
The final practice hour before that crucial qualifying session was typically close, the top 23 drivers within two seconds around the Portland road course.
Dario Franchitti and Bryan Herta, both of whom could easily have won this race last year, were fastest in Saturday morning practice on a dry track. Series leader Juan Montoya was back in 8th, but had been over a second faster than everyone else during Friday practice.
Patrick Carpentier and Richie Hearn, stars of first qualifying, slumped to 15th and 22nd, but Carpentier's Player's/Forsythe team mate Greg Moore was third quickest.
Another notable performance was Christian Fittipaldi in 5th, the Newman-Haas driver having failed to set a time yesterday but clearly right on the pace this morning.
