FIA GTs, Jarama: Piccini fastest

Andrea Piccini set the pace in the first qualifying session for this weekend's round of the FIA GT championship at Jarama. The BMS Scuderia Italia driver was comfortably quickest around the twisty Spanish track in his Ferrari 550 Maranello, and admitted that he didn't have to work hard to set his best time of 1m30.544s

"It was an easy lap," said Piccini. "The car is very good. We had a small problem with the engine that cost us a little bit of time, but it will be solved before the race because it could turn into a big problem over a long distance. We just hope that the car will be reliable over the race distance."

Piccini ended the session with an advantage of almost three tenths over Marc Duez, the quickest of a trio of three Chrysler Vipers that filled the next three places. Briton Jamie Campbell-Walter was fifth quickest for Lister, and team-mate Bobby Verdon-Roe was sixth and the last of the Super Pole contenders. Neither of the Lister drivers chose to make a final run of new tyres in the hope that this will give them an advantage on Sunday.

It was a bad day for the second Ferrari 550 of Philippe Alliot and David Hallyday. An oil pump failure brought the car to halt before it had set a timed lap and caused the car to dump oil over the track, which brought out the red flag.

It was a Porsche benefit in N-GT with the top three provisional grid places all going to 996 GT3-Rs. Stephane Ortelli took provisional pole ahead of Antonio Garcia and Philipp Peter. The championship leading Ferrari 360 Modena of Christian Pescatori failed to make the top six and thus misses out on the Super Pole shoot out.
