Ferrari Challenge, round 1

Spanish drivers made the best of their local knowledge at the first round of the Ferrari 360 Challenge in Jarama on Saturday, Javier Diaz winning the premier class and Jose Maria Roger taking the laurels in the opening class two race

Both won the 15-lap rounds by convincing margins from drivers well-known to British fans. Diaz romped away from pole and took an easy victory from ex-Ford Fiesta racer Michael Cullen, while Roger got a good run on the rolling start to overtake British pole-sitter John Greasley.

In class one, Cullen was also aided by the fact that seven cars, including that of reigning champion Ange Barde, missed the deadline to be on the grid and had to start from the pit-lane. Despite that, Barde put in a storming drive to finish fourth behind ex-Formula 3000 driver Gregor Foitek, who was pushing Cullen hard by the end.

Greasley surprised himself by sticking his car on pole for the class two race but it was the relatively inexperienced Roger who was the star of the show, leading by more than six seconds at one point. Greasley, having slipped initially back to third behind Spaniard Manuel Cerqueda, reclaimed the spot when Cerqueda crashed out and was also pushed across the line by yet another Spaniard Santiago Puig.
