Ferrari Challenge: Bosch double

Dutchman John Bosch scored a famous double victory at the sun-drenched Zandvoort circuit in Holland in this weekend's third round of the 2002 Ferrari Challenge Trofeo Pirelli.

Bosch, who had hoped for wet weather - his preferred conditions, especially in the light of his victory in monsoon-like conditions at the last round at Spa - held off strong challenges from polesitter Spaniard Javier Diaz in the first race and then from Frenchman Ange Barde in the second.

The first race was marred by a heavy first corner incident which saw the 24-strong field of race-prepared 360 Modenas reduced to a mere 16 when the highly competitive pilots attempted to negotiate the first corner, Tarzanbocht, four abreast after the series' mandatory rolling start.

On the restart, Bosch passed Diaz and fended off the advances of the clearly quicker Spaniard, who set the fastest race lap yet remained unable to pass the Kroymans Racing Team Driver. Robert Pergl, the Czech driver who had qualified ninth, drove a solid and defensive race to secure the final spot on the podium.

In the second Class 1 race, Ange Barde, who had climbed from eighth to fourth on the first lap, soon gained second and pushed Bosch all the way to the chequered flag, rarely straying more than a second behind his rival. The results see Barde move to within three points of series leader, Diaz, whilst Bosch gains third in the championship from Irishman Cullen.

In Class 2, Dutchman Martin Lanting snatched the win from compatriot Arie Bertram when the latter spun out on the final lap. The second Class 2 race was taken by Italian Rene De Luigi, who jumped Lanting at the rolling start and passed him around the outside into turn one.
