F2 to support WTCC in 2009

Jonathan Palmer has confirmed that the new Formula Two series will support the World Touring Car Championship for the majority of its inaugural season

F2 to support WTCC in 2009

The FIA's new Formula One feeder category will make its debut at the Valencia WTCC round on 31 May 2009, and will run at four other European WTCC events before culminating at Monza in early October.

It will also be the headline category in separate events at Donington Park and Magny-Cours, and will run alongside the International GT Open series at Spa.

"We have eight events, 16 races, and most of these events are associated with the FIA World Touring Car Championship, which you know always draws big crowds at circuits around the world," said Palmer.

"There will be a month of testing before the first round."

The F2 format will see two practice sessions, two separate qualifying sessions, and two 110-kilometre races held each weekend, with the second race featuring a mandatory pitstop.

The top ten finishers will receive points on a 12-10-8-7-6-5-4-3-2-1 basis.

Provisional 2009 F2 calendar: 1. Valencia May 31 (WTCC support) 2. Brno June 21 (WTCC support) 3. Spa June 28 (GT Open support) 4. Brands Hatch July 19 (WTCC support) 5. Donington Park August 6 (standalone) 6. Oschersleben August 30 (WTCC support) 7. Magny Cours September 20 (standalone) 8. Monza October 4 (WTCC support)
