F1 test for Formula Ford champ
This year's UK Formula Ford champion will be rewarded with a test in a Cosworth-powered Formula 1 car after car manufacturer Ford threw its support behind the championship
Initially, Ford Team RS, the motorsport division of the car-making giant, will provide technical assistance for the single-seater series as well as a tailored promotional support package, but it may later increase its support to the full backing previously enjoyed.
Ford Team RS director Jost Capito said: "FFord has played a crucial role in grooming the sport's future stars and providing an affordable competition arena for amateur drivers for nearly 40 years. We are determined this heritage will not be lost and that the category has a strong future.
"There is a chance our involvement will increase over time, and we are already able to confirm a test in an F1 car."
A secondary prize, possibly aimed at the Scholarship Class champion, will be a
test in a Ford Focus World Rally Championship car.
Ford's move to back UK FFord, predicted exclusively in AUTOSPORT (December 4), is a massive boost to the championship, which had a more successful season in 2003 following a couple of lean years.
It means FFord now has the manufacturer support enjoyed by junior rivals Formula Renault UK and Formula BMW. But FFord coordinator Barbara Armstrong believes the deal allows flexibility. "It's a hugely exciting move," she said. "We are delighted that Ford has come back on board so strongly. We think 2004 is just the tip of the iceberg for Ford's involvement.
"It is very important for FFord. We believe that championships with huge backing are dangerous because, at some point, that backing can be taken away. FFord has proved over the last few years that it can work self-sufficiently, but having some manufacturer backing sends out a high-profile message too."
Ford Team RS has also confirmed the technical regulations will be frozen for 2004 and any future changes will be tabled at regular meetings with the series' chassis constructors and engine preparation specialists.
