Ekstrom beats Schumacher in RoC
Mattias Ekstrom has retained the Champion of Champions crown, beating Michael Schumacher in the Race of Champions final at Wembley
The two-time DTM champion beat Schumacher in a tie-break in the best of three final, and the German spun his car coming out of the final corner as Ekstrom took the spoils ahead of him.
Ekstrom had won the first heat between the two in the Solution F touring cars, but Schumacher responded by winning the heat in the RoC Buggies that he was unbeatable in all night.
The deciding race was in the touring cars again, and there were discussions before the run as Schumacher appeared to request that they swap cars, rather than run in the same ones that they had used in the first heat.
But that didn't affect Ekstrom, who won the event for the second year running after beating Andy Priaulx, Travis Pastrana, and his Audi DTM teammate Tom Kristensen in the earlier rounds.
Schumacher had defeated Henning Solberg in the first round, before beating Jenson Button for the second time this evening, and then winning against Sebastien Bourdais in the semi-final.
Schumacher didn't have to face Heikki Kovalainen this time, as the Finn crashed out of the competition in spectacular fashion.
The new McLaren signing was neck and neck with Priaulx through the final corner in their quarter final, but as Kovalainen accelerated on the tighter inside lane, he lost control and clattered the barriers in the middle of the track.
Priaulx then cost himself any chance of success with a spin of his own in his semi-final against Ekstrom, who appeared to have the measure of the three-time World Touring Car champion.
Petter Solberg was another driver to hit trouble, as he spun during his first round clash with David Coulthard.
