Ecclestone setting up F1 parade in London
Up to seven F1 racecars may take part in a demonstration run on Tuesday July 6 on the streets of central London as a promotional curtain-raiser for the British GP at Silverstone the following Sunday. The plan by commercial rights holder Bernie Ecclestone is understood to envisage a route down Regent Street and round Trafalgar Square. "There's a very good chance this is going to happen," Ecclestone said yesterday. "We're working on it."
BAR team chief David Richards praised the idea as a great profile-raising exercise. "I've been very supportive of the idea of running F1 cars in central London," he said. "This is a great opportunity to take the cars closer to the public, and what better setting than in Regent Street? It is a great chance to promote the whole sport."
The Guardian newspaper reports that there is no suggestion that London is contemplating a street-circuit, but that insiders see the promotion as a subtle attempt by Ecclestone to exert pressure on the government to support the British GP.
