Dubai Autodrome base for A1 Grand Prix
The Dubai promoter behind the new A1 Grand Prix 'winter series' concept [Jan 26], Sheikh Maktoum Hasher Maktoum Al Maktoum, has confirmed that it will be based on the new Dubai Autodrome development and will offer a prize fund of approximately US$2m, possibly more. In an article in AUTOSPORT today, Sheikh Maktoum writes that the new series, for 'spec' Lola-Langford single-seaters, will run from September to March, involving competitors from the Middle East, Asia, Africa and Australia
"The beauty of A1 Grand Prix," he said, "is that it will not clash with the rest of the motorsport world. It will turn the sport from a cyclical industry into one featuring action all year round. My dream is to work with the FIA to make this sport even greater. A1 Grand Prix can do that."
A1 Grand Prix, based on a 'nations cup' format, is scheduled to begin in 2005. The series will be officially launched in April and the definitive racecar will be revealed in July.
The all-new, 5.4km (3.4-mile) Dubai venue will also host the new Formula X Gulf 'junior' single-seater and sportscar category, starting this season. Formula X will also feature in Bahrain and Qatar.
