Doornbos feels win was vital
Robert Doornbos believes that it was crucial for his championship chances to take advantage of Sebastien Bourdais having rare off weekend at San Jose
Bourdais had a tricky race on his way to a fifth place finish while Doornbos won from 15th on the grid, but the Dutchman is not expecting the Newman/Haas/Lanigan team to have any more poor weekends as they battle for the championship.
"Newman/Haas/Lanigan will definitely not back off, so obviously this is very important," said the Minardi Team USA driver.
"When I saw Sebastien struggling in second practice on Saturday morning, I thought we needed to capitalise on this."
Doornbos admitted that while the team had been disappointed with their qualifying performance, it made their victory even more satisfying, as they closed the gap to Bourdais to just 10 points.
"We wanted to qualify in front to try to score more points than him, but to do it in this way is obviously even better," said Doornbos.
"The team is getting stronger every weekend, and this was a great way to come back after two poor races for us."
