Cleveland axed from 2000 calendar
The CART Championship series has dropped Cleveland from next year's race calendar
The decision to quit the temporary circuit at Burke Lakefront Airport came after months of negotiations between CART and race promoter IMG ended without agreement.
'It was CART's desire to continue to race at Cleveland and it is unfortunate we could not come to an agreement,' said CART chairman and ceo Andrew Craig.
The circuit now looks certain to become part of CART's rival, the Indy Racing League.
IMG president Bud Stanner is said to be angry that CART is raising its fee to host a race from $2 million (£1.2 million), when he can probably get a deal with the IRL for half that price.
Craig has now signed an multi-year extension with the Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course through to 2003.
'Champ Cars have long been a staple of the racing landscape in the Midwest and, in particular, Ohio,' said Craig.
'The race fans in Cleveland are among the best on our schedule and we look forward to having them join us at Mid-Ohio.'
