CART: Nunn to head Mercedes assault
Veteran race engineer Mo Nunn is about to sign up to head a factory-backed Mercedes team in the CART series.
The 61-year-old, who helped Ganassi Racing take four CART series titles, has reportedly joined up with PacWest team boss Bruce McCaw and former Patrick Racing manager Steve Newey to head an assault on the series title.
'Everything has been laid out and agreed to by Mercedes,' said Nunn. 'It's waiting for our signatures, we just need a driver.'
Former Hogan Racing driver Helio Castro Neves was strongly tipped to join the new outfit.
However, he has just signed up with Penske, replacing the late Greg Moore, who was due to join the marque at the end of this season.
'Castro Neves was the guy we wanted,' admitted Nunn, 'but he's signed with another team. It's a bit of a setback. I don't see anyone out there who I believe can win races.
'We're looking at everyone - in Formula One and Formula 3000. I'm not sure there's anyone in Indy who can do the job.'
