Craig approves Indy 500 outing
CART boss Andrew Craig has endorsed the participation of Champ Car teams in the 2000 Indianapolis 500, by leaving space for it on the official race schedule.
The last two weekends in May have been deliberately left vacant, giving CART outfits the chance to attend both qualifying and race days at the legendary event.
Despite a breakdown in unification talks between CART and the Indy Racing League, both sides will now race at the event.
'It is widely known that we made significant efforts to secure a resolution to the issues that have divided CART and IRL,' said Craig.
'When it became apparent in early October that our efforts were not going to result in a resolution of those issues, CART and its team owners examined whether it would be feasible to compete in the Indy 500.
'Many of the specific issues relative to Indy, which precluded CART teams from participating in recent years, have been resolved.
'Our teams have decided it is in their best interest, as well as that of the sport, to return to the Speedway to compete for the title of Indianapolis 500 champion.'
IRL boss Tony George, who owns the Indianapolis circuit, issued an Indy 500 invitation to CART teams last week.
