Birmingham Superprix back?

The Birmingham street race circuit could host a race meeting again as soon as May 2006, if plans currently before the council come to fruition, according to this week's Autosport magazine

Promoter Quintus Showplace says it has held detailed discussions about the revival of the track which held races between 1986 and 1990. Birmingham councillor John Alden - the city's cabinet member for leisure and sport - is also firmly behind the plan. The aim is to run a meeting on the May Bank Holiday in 2006, coinciding with the Motor Show at the NEC.

Birmingham is currently the only city in the UK which could hold street races, thanks to the Act of Parliament passed in 1985 which allowed the original races to be run.

Formula 3000 was top of the bill on the original meetings with support from the British Touring Car Championship. BTCC boss Alan Gow would welcome a revival. "Of course it would be good if it happened," he said, "but there's a long way to go between idea and inception. This country needs a good street race with the right promotion, marketing and organisation behind it. We haven't got an iconic event other than the British Grand Prix."
