Barron hits double trouble at Lausitz
After the success of Dale Coyne Racing's Champ Car christening of the Rockingham oval in the UK last week, the second half of CART's European voyage of discovery wasn't quite as successful at the Lausitzring
Alex Barron twice damaged the Dale Coyne Racing Lola-Ford that was being used to evaluate tyre wear for September's German 500.
His first task at Lausitz was to put on a demonstration for the 15,000 spectators for the German Top-10 racing package on Saturday. Barron was told to execute a series of doughnuts, at the behest of circuit manager Hans Jorg Fischer after a similar display from Jimmy Vasser last year, but lost control during the manoeuvre and nosed into the wall, slightly damaging the car.
Barron's proper running on Monday was also halted prematurely when he hit the wall and badly damaged the rear of the car when a rain shower swept across the circuit and caught him out.
In the meantime, however, he managed to record over 100 laps of the two-mile oval, lapping in 187.65mph. The FedEx Champ Car series comes to Germany on September 15.
