All Autosport Awards categories open as Rider of the Year vote begins

All the 2018 Autosport Awards categories are now open for voting, with Rider of the Year presented by Tata Communications completing the set

Autosport Awards

The Autosport Awards are a series of awards presented by motor racing magazine Autosport to drivers that have achieved significant milestones each season. Some of the presentations are selected by the general public via a reader's poll.

The Award for motorcycle racing is a recent innovation, and has been won by Marc Marquez both years since its 2016 inception.

Having stormed to a fifth world championship in his six MotoGP seasons this year, Marquez will again be a strong contender when the Award outcome is announced at the December 2 ceremony in London.

But his opposition includes his World Superbike counterpart - Jonathan Rea becoming the first non-grand-prix rider to make the shortlist thanks to his record-shattering domination of WSBK, which is covered in-depth by Autosport's sister website motorsport.com.

The shortlist is completed by those who have tried to make Marquez's life difficult in MotoGP this season.

Andrea Dovizioso again emerged as the Honda man's main title challenger, and his Ducati team-mate Jorge Lorenzo ironically blossomed after being dropped by the squad for 2019 - responding with a string of wins and quickly securing a Honda seat.

In one of Yamaha's toughest MotoGP seasons yet, Valentino Rossi is an Award contender having kept himself in the championship top three fight despite his bike's shortcomings.

Cal Crutchlow completes the shortlist, having again starred on his independent LCR Honda - even winning the Argentinian GP and briefly leading the championship.

Like Lorenzo he is currently sidelined by injury, with Crutchlow's likely to mean he does not race again this year.
