24 Hours of Nürburgring - Qualifying

In qualifying for this weekend's 24 Hours race on the Nürburgring

Nordschleife, Peter Zakowski put the Zakspeed Chrysler Viper onpole, going 2.5s quicker than his nearest rival.

Volker Strycek thought he'd done enough in the DTM Opel
Calibra, but at the beginning of the third and final qualifying
session, when it was already dark, Zakowski put in a flying
lap around the 14.1-mile circuit to snatch pole.

Remarkably, neither of the cars on row 2 uses petrol. Third quickest
is the natural gas powered Audi A4 quattro, with Christian Abt at
the wheel, while Kris Nissen put the Volkswagen Bora turbodiesel
on fourth, just 0.07s slower than the Audi. However, those two
are almost 45s away from pole position.

Traffic was a problem in qualifying - "It was like rush hour out
there," said one driver. 195 cars are set to start the race.

Top ten times from Friday qualifying for the 24 Hours of the Nürburgring, held on the full 14.1-mile Nordschleife circuit.
