Marquez closes Lorenzo's lead to less than three tenths of a second!

A win with Rossi only third is reasonably good for Lorenzo. Second place just one place ahead of his team-mate wouldn't do a lot for his title hopes with just two more races to go. Right now, Marquez is Rossi's best friend.

Across the line with 13 laps to go and suddenly Lorenzo's lead is down to just 0.4s over Marquez.

Marquez has suddenly pulled a gap on Rossi and Iannone, and he's hunting down Lorenzo, rapidly taking half a second out of the leader.

Iannone shoots past both Rossi and Marquez on the pits straight. Neither is that impressed by that, they repass him at the following corners.
That's all helping Lorenzo, his lead is back up to 1.3s.

Behind them, Crutchlow is back through on Pedrosa for fifth, with Maverick Vinales still battling with them.

Lorenzo's lead is coming down - it's under a second over the tightly-packed Marquez, Rossi and Iannone for the first time in a while.

The podium battle is spreading out very slightly with 17 laps left. Rossi is still on Marquez's back, and Iannone isn't far behind, but the rest of the group has dropped away a little.

It's been a pretty tidy race so far, but Nicky Hayden is out, looks like a crash.

Marquez runs very wide out of the first corner, and that's a big opportunity for Rossi. The Honda manages to grab the line back before Rossi can get through.

Here comes Rossi again, he takes third back from Iannone and is now aiming for Marquez's second place. Still 20 laps to go, Lorenzo leads by just over a second.

This ferocious battle over second place is allowing others to catch up - the two Suzukis are right behind the podium pack too now.

No sooner is Rossi up to second than he's back down to fourth behind Iannone and Marquez. Marquez then absolutely shoves Iannone aside at the hairpin, and while they're all busy with each other, Lorenzo has scarpered off into a one-second lead.

Now Rossi gets Marquez more decisively, and that makes space for Iannone to retake third from Marquez too.

Lorenzo has got a bit of a gap now, with Marquez and Rossi fighting for second. Twice Rossi gets through, twice Marquez takes it back.

Rossi slices past Iannone into third, and Crutchlow follows. The Ducati is down to fifth for now.

Marquez takes second back from Iannone at the hairpin, and Rossi has a look too.

This time Lorenzo has enough of a cushion out of the final corner to not get swallowed up by Iannone on the pits straight, though the Ducati is on his tail by the time the reach Turn 1.

Now some progress for Rossi - he picks off Pedrosa and Crutchlow in quick succession to move up to fourth. And he's got there without losing ground to the lead pack, he's right in behind Marquez now.

This is spectacular stuff between Marquez, Iannone and Lorenzo, and it's Lorenzo back into the lead now as Iannone and Marquez scuffle over second.

On the pits straight, both Iannone and Marquez slipstream Lorenzo and sweep past, the Yamaha is down to third. Iannone leads, but only briefly before Marquez outbrakes him.

That was unpleasant, Iannone effectively headbutted a seagull to death at very high speed, lost momentum and the lead.

Marquez has retaken third from Pedrosa at the second attempt, and now he's got a sniff at Lorenzo after the Yamaha man lost a bit of momentum getting too close to Iannone.

Lorenzo sweeps past Iannone into the lead. Now can he pull away? He said yesterday that if he didn't make inroads into Rossi's 18-point lead today, the title battle was basically over.

Dani Pedrosa - hard-fought winner last time out at Motegi - shoves his Honda inside Marquez's example and takes third.

Iannone surges way from second place and is miles ahead by the first corner. Ducati leads, and it's Lorenzo who gets through on Marquez to take second as they turn in.

The field is just setting off on the formation lap - it's Marc Marquez on pole from Andrea Iannone and Jorge Lorenzo, while Valentino Rossi is back on row three in seventh place after struggling for one-lap pace yet again.
