Toccacelo topples Liuzzi

Vitantonio Liuzzi has lost his 100 per cent record of race wins in the FIA Formula 3000 Championship and his championship lead after a disastrous Nurburgring race, which was won by title rival Enrico Toccacelo

Liuzzi made a poor start from pole and was ambushed by Toccacelo and Jeffrey van Hooydonk at the first corner. Things got a little heated, and Liuzzi suffered tyre damage that required him to pit on lap two, dropping him to the tail of the field.

Van Hooydonk led the race until the pitstops, despite the fact that Toccacelo and those behind were obviously quicker. Robert Doornbos, Liuzzi's Arden team-mate, briefly led as the pit stop cycle was completed, but once out front, Toccacelo ran away with it.

The Italian won by 9.9secs, as Doornbos managed to fend off a train of cars comprising Yannick Schroeder, Esteban Guerrieri, Jose Maria Lopez, Raffaele Giammaria, Tomas Enge and van Hooydonk. It was Toccacelo's second F3000 win at the Nurburgring, and the first for the BCN Competition team.

Liuzzi finished 11th.
