Liuzzi wins at Monaco
Vitantonio Liuzzi won his third FIA Formula 3000 International race on the bounce at Monaco on Saturday, the series leader keeping the challenge of championship rival Enrico Toccacelo at bay
Liuzzi made a great start from pole position to lead Toccacelo and Jose Maria Lopez, the latter requiring clearance to race after a heavy shunt in qualifying. Speaking of crashes, Tomas Enge and Esteban Guerrieri got together on the exit of Loews on the opening lap, causing the latter to rear up on two wheels.
Despite the fact his car was damaged, Guerrieri managed to reverse into the middle of the track while the leaders were on lap two, causing all sorts of dramatic avoidances. Can Artam then departed into the barriers at Massenet, and the safety car was called upon.
Liuzzi kept his cool at the head of the field at the restart, and fended off a mid-race spurt from Toccacelo, who got to within 0.7secs. Toccacelo was first of the leading two to pit, but a sticking right-rear didn't help his cause and dropped him back towards the clutches of Lopez.
By contrast, Liuzzi made a great stop, and reeled off the laps to score another excellent victory. Toccacelo held second from Lopez, with Raffaele Giammaria moving up to fourth. Patrick Friesacher closed right up in the latter stages once he'd pulled off a brilliant move on Robert Doornbos in the tunnel.
Dutchman Doornbos finished sixth, ahead of fellow lowlander, Belgium's Jeffrey van Hooydonk.
