Silverstone: Enge strolls home
Tomas Enge completed a crushing lights to flag win in the British round of the F3000 series at Silverstone today (Saturday), cutting Sebastien Bourdais' lead in the championship to nine points as he did so
From the start Enge led Bourdais into Copse and from there on in the former F1 driver was never troubled, eventually finishing the 30-lap race 12.9s up on his championship rival, although afterwards he denied it had been a stroll for him.
"It wasn't easy," said Enge. "I made a mistake at the start and got too much wheelspin and lost speed, but it was not too bad. The car was nearly perfect and I could push as much as I wanted the team did a great job."
Bourdais had a similarly comfortable drive, keeping the third place car of Ricardo Sperafico well behind him. The main action for the top positions was in the battle for fourth and fifth with Giorgio Pantano and Antonio Pizzonia contesting the place at close quarters.
At the start Pizzonia took advantage of Pantano's slow getaway to make a brave move around the outside at Copse. The Brazilian actually took to the grass, but somehow kept control of his car and held the place. But by the end of lap two he was demoted to fifth after Pantano pulled an audacious manoeuvre through Vale and into Club.
Thereafter the positions remained unchanged until the end with Bjorn Wirdheim claiming the final point for sixth.
Further down the order Ricardo Mauricio and Mario Haberfeld battled for 10th, but the contest ended with both in the gravel after the pair collided at Stowe.
