Qualifying 1: Bourdais leaves it late

Sebastien Bourdais took his now traditional provisional pole position for the Formula 3000 International Championship at Silverstone this afternoon (Friday)

The Super Nova ace didn't have it all his own way, however, and things looked bad when he clashed with Alex Muller and spun early on. But the Frenchman bounced back, and timed his run to perfection on a wet but drying track. His final effort of 1m43.661s was rivaled only by Astromega's Mario Haberfeld's 1m44.376s.

The drying conditions meant pole changed hands several times in the closing moments, with Giorgio Pantano (Coloni) also in with a shout until he was unlucky with his timing at the chequered flag. The Italian is currently third, ahead of Rob Nguyen (Astromega) and Enrico Toccacelo (Coloni).

Series frontrunner Tomas Enge was a longtime pole sitter, only to lose out in the final stages and he tumbled to seventh.
