Qualifying: Sperafico grabs pole

Ricardo Sperafico left it late to grab a thrilling pole position for Saturday's FIA Formula 3000 race at Spa-Francorchamps

Sperafico became embroiled in a nip-and-tuck battle for pole with Petrobras team mate Antonio Pizzonia on a damp but rapidly drying track. He came out on top at the restart after a red flag was required for Enrico Toccacelo's crash at Stavelot.

"I didn't expect this, it's my first time here," said Sperafico. "We went out on slicks straight away in the second session, which was a big risk but it proved to be the right choice."

Second placed Pizzonia rued a mistake on his final lap at La Source: "I lost pole because I made that mistake. I'm a bit disappointed because it was my mistake."

Series leader Justin Wilson, who only requires one point to wrap up the title at Spa, languished as low as 20th during the session. He started out on wets but the track dried out quicker than he expected. After switching to slicks, he jumped to 12th, but a final push on new tyres gave him the third fastest time on his last lap.

"I thought it was going all wrong," he admitted. "It was a risk to use new tyres, because I had to get them warmed up. I made a mistake at Stavelot on my quickest lap, so I was surprised to be third."

The only man who can beat him to the title, Australia's Mark Webber, did hold pole for a time but slipped to fifth. As in the first session, he ran wide at Pouhon on his quickest lap which hampered his efforts.
