1st qualifying: Pizzonia holds sway

Antonio Pizzonia has taken provisional pole position for Saturday's FIA Formula 3000 race at Spa-Francorchamps, but series leader Justin Wilson is just where he needs to be to score the solitary point required to take the title

On a wet but drying track, Pizzonia (Petrobras) scooped pole with his last lap of the session, two-tenths clear of Red Bull's Patrick Friesacher.

Minardi's David Saelens, who has received the all clear to race in the category again after suffering back pain in Hungary, was third quickest ahead of Astromega's Giorgio Pantano.

Wilson (Nordic) was fifth quickest, just ahead of title rival Mark Webber (Super Nova) whose efforts were hampered by a minor off track excursion at Pouhon.
