Premat looks to emulate Rosberg
Alexandre Premat hopes to emulate Nico Rosberg in GP2 this season - and land a drive in Formula One after winning the championship
Rosberg earned a seat at Williams this season after a stellar year in GP2's first season. His 2005 teammate Premat hopes that he himself can repeat this season the German's feat last year.
"I want to have a really good championship - and win the championship, definitely," Premat told autosport.com.
"For sure I hope for a lot of things about this GP2 season, because last year I finished fourth - Just behind Nico, Heikki [Kovalainen] and Scott [Speed], and they have now gone to Formula One.
"It will be not easy, because there will be a lot of drivers who will be very strong this year, like Lewis [Hamilton] and [Jose Maria] Lopez and Nicolas [Lapierre].
"Lopez - he went really well in testing, and maybe [Nelson] Piquet too, because he improved a lot in testing, and in A1 GP he was fast. He made a lot of mistakes, too, but I think Lopez and Nicolas will be strong.
"For sure this is a really good opportunity too, if we won the championship, to make the next step to Formula One."
Premat believes he will have the edge over his new teammate - runaway F3 Euroseries champion Lewis Hamilton - but the pace of both of them will help push their ART team up the grid.
"Lewis is a really good guy, just like Nico Rosberg," Premat said. "He has improved a lot since F3 Euroeseries and during testing, and it is a good challenge for us to push very hard. We want to win every race, and maybe he wants to win the championship, but I want to win it too.
"I think that both of us being quick will push each other forward. It is really nice to have two strong drivers, because we push and push and push - just like Nico and I did in the beginning to the middle of the season last year. We are confident about this.
"I might have the edge, though, because of my experience. I have a lot of experience in the races and in the pitstops and the starts."
The new GP2 season begins at Valencia this weekend.
