Piquet Jr cruises to race 1 victory
Nelson Piquet Jr cruised to victory in the opening round of the GP2 season at Valencia
The Piquet Sports driver made the most of his pole position and romped to his second GP2 career win - only conceding the lead during the pitstops. In the end, his winning margin was seconds, and he was never really threatened.
In the opening stages it was the fast-starting iSport car of Ernesto Viso who took the fight to Piquet, but he dropped back during the pitstop period, and it was ART driver Lewis Hamilton who claimed second.
Hamilton made a slow start from third on the grid but charged his way back into contention. Second came after teammate Alex Premat spun, the Frenchman had a torrid race, losing eighth - and race 2 pole - to Viso on the final lap.
Adrian Valles held second for a long period during the middle of the race, but lost out to the ART pair in the pits. Nonetheless, he recovered for third - Campos Racing's first GP2 podium.
Nicolas Lapierre starred, setting fastest lap on his way from 21st to fourth, while Gimmi Bruni gave Trident points on their debut, chasing Jose Maria Lopez all the way to the line for sixth.
Michael Ammermuller took seventh after a charging GP2 series debut for Arden.
