Liuzzi romps to fifth win

Vitantonio Liuzzi won his fifth race from six FIA Formula 3000 International starts at Silverstone on Saturday, the Italian Arden driver leading from start to finish

Liuzzi's only real opposition came from title rival Enrico Toccacello (BCN), the only other man to have won a race this season. He caught Liuzzi in the final six or seven laps but was unable to get close enough to attempt to pass him.

Tomas Enge (Ma-Con) made up for his qualifying penalty, which dropped him from third on the grid to fourth, and closed up to the leaders in the closing stages, but had to settle for third. Jose Maria Lopez finished fourth, a solid result after a couple of poor race results for the CMS Performance driver.

Patrick Friesacher bounced back from a slow pitstop to finish fifth, making the most of a tangle between Raffaele Giammaria (AEZ) and Esteban Guerrieri (BCN), which dropped the latter out of the points as his front wing became detached.

Giammaria finished sixth ahead of Tony Schmidt (Ma-Con) and Alan van der Merwe (Super Nova). Van der Merwe's team-mate Jeffrey van Hooydonk was an early spinner when he clashed with Arden's Robert Doornbos.

The rain showers that threatened F1 qualifying were present throughout the F3000 race too, but continued to soak the countryside surrounding the Northamptonshire track rather than the track itself.
