Liuzzi scores record victory

Vitantonio Liuzzi scored a record sixth FIA Formula 3000 International race of the season at Hockenheim in his Arden International-run Lola-Zytek on Saturday

The Italian was beaten off the line by fellow countryman (and front row starter) Enrico Toccacelo (BCN) but hit the front after the pitstops. Toccacelo suffered an awful stop, whereas Liuzzi stayed out a lap later and rejoined well clear. He eventually won by over 6secs.

There was a great battle for third place after the third, fourth and fifth position starters failed to complete the distance. Patrick Friesacher (Coloni) was pushed off the grid before the start, while Tomas Enge (Ma-Con) and Yannick Schroeder (Durango) collided putting Enge out on the spot and Schroeder didn't last much longer.

That promoted a fantastic duel between Esteban Guerrieri (BCN) and the second Arden car of Robert Doornbos. The latter got ahead of Guerrieri in the early going, but Esteban retook the final spot on the podium with a brave move near the finish.

Tony Schmidt (Ma-Con) finished fifth, ahead of Jose Maria Lopez (CMS) who made up for a disastrous qualifying with a charging drive to sixth.
