Race 2: Ricardo at the double
After his dominant performance in race one, Ricardo Zonta was expected to do it again in race two at Jarama in Spain, and he didn't disappoint
A lightning start and blinding opening lap left his rivals trailing in his wake to the tune of 1.8secs as he flashed across the finish line on lap one. Behind, Franck Montagy (Racing Engineering) moved up to third at the start from fourth on the grid, although his team-mate Justin Wilson was less fortunate and was tagged by Angel Burgueno (Meycom), who had already spun on the warm-up lap, which gave the Briton a puncture.
Montagny made short work of second placed Antonio Garcia (Adrian Campos Motorsport) at the start of lap three, but was almost 3secs in arrears of Zonta's Gabord Competicion car. The safety car came to his rescue as Polo Villaamil had slammed his Campos-run car into the tyrewall at the second hairpin.
At the restart, Zonta got the hammer down once more and slowly pulled away from Montagny, despite the Frenchman's best efforts. Montagny's race was then ruined during his mandatory pit stop, when his right-front wheel jammed fast and he lost over a minute.
Another frontrunner to suffer in a similar vein was Ireland's Damien Faulkner (Zele Motorsport), who was running fifth before his pit stop went awry. He later spun off trying to make up for lost time, but impressively set the race's third fastest lap behind Zonta and Montagny.
That allowed Bas Leinders (KTR) to come through to second, after his strategy of an early stop paid dividends. India's Narain Karthikeyan (RC Motorsport) inherited third, benefiting when Felix Porteiro (Vergani Racing) was given a stop/go penalty for speeding in the pits, and also when Antonio Garcia spun on lap 13.
Nicolas Filiberti (Zele) finished an impressive fourth from 16th on the grid, while Jean-Christophe Ravier (Epsilon by Graff) and Peter Sundberg (RC Motorsport) also took advantage of the rate of attrition ahead of them to round out the top six.
Ricardo Zonta, Gabord Competicion, 26 laps
Bas Leinders, KTR, +10.501s
Narain Karthikeyan, RC Motorsport, +17.171s
Nicolas Filiberti, Zele Motorsport, +20.364s
Jean-Christophe Ravier, Epsilon by Graff, +26.342s
Peter Sundberg, RC Motorsport, +29.852s
